Flawless skin is the dream of every woman in the world. With thousands of beauty brands advertising their products to lure potential customers, it is easy to get confused. Many of us are swayed by these marketing activities and sales and end up jumping from one product to product, which results in significant skincare issues. The best way to nourish your skin is by looking for warning signs that signal you are using the wrong product.
Signs that you are using wrong products -
Dry and flaky skin:
Makeup or skincare products with retinol or alpha hydroxy acids make your skin excessively dry and flaky skin. Prolonged use of such products also results in patchy skin, fine lines, and dark spots. Some exfoliators may be just harsh for your skin and result in all these excessive drying and flaking, which rub off natural oils of your skin, which are essential.
Rashes:
Rashes are mainly caused by preservatives or artificial fragrances infused in regular makeup products. If your skin is sensitive, you should always steer clear from using chemical ingredients like Parabens, Formaldehyde, SLS, etcetera. If you are experiencing severe allergic reactions around the rashes, then you should stop applying any exfoliator until it heals completely.
Breakouts:
For a new skincare routine to adjust and show effects on your skin, it may take up to 3-4 weeks. While some breakouts can appear on your skin when it adapts to new products.
Bumps and Swelling:
Nothing can be more annoying than those red, white bumps and swellings over your skin. While some of them may come from hormonal changes and are occasional. Still, if they are persistent for the time being, maybe there is something wrong with the skincare products you use. Often these bumps are accompanied by itching sensations. Chemical ingredients like oxybenzone are allergens and can be the reason for such reactions. They signal that the skin is irritated and inflamed. The reason behind these can point to various factors at play. Therefore it is always better to consult a dermatologist for better skin.
Oily Skin:
While some people have oily skin type, if yours is not and still you are suffering from excessive oil production, this may have to do with the harsh facial cleansers you use. When these cleansers strip off natural oil from your skin, the skin gets dried up, and to moisturize it naturally, the oil glands produce more oil to make up for it. To stop that, you are better to avoid oil-absorbing cleansers from your skincare regime. Using serums and cleansers that are rich in hyaluronic acid will yield better results.
Burning and stinging sensation:
While it is ok for some skincare products(e.g., cleansers, face-masks, night creams) to have a momentary tingling sensation, in case it lasts long, it is not suitable for your skin. Whenever you try out a new product, it is better to first apply a part of it in a small area for any inflammatory reactions. You may want to consult with a skincare specialist for lingering burning sensations and switch to gentler products with ingredients like vitamin C.
Tight Skin:
Tight skin can occur if your skin is excessively dehydrated. It is easy to confuse dehydration with dry skin. When dry skin is a skin type that someone is born with, dehydrated skin is a condition arising from harsh chemical products. If your skin feels tight after cleansing, it may soon result in large pores and wrinkles. It is advisable to switch to pH balanced gentler skincare products.
Dark spots:
These arise mostly from long exposure to harmful UV rays. It may further cause pigmentation and uneven skin tone. Even if these persist with using your sun-proof lotions, then it is time to find a clinically advised sunscreen product/day cream.
